Hand Bound Albums by Bénédicte Verley
There are two major parts of a wedding – the images shot on the day of the event,
and the album that tells the story incorporating the 100 best images from the entire event.
Our albums are 100% hand bound from beginning to end – made with love and care – in our Rhode Island studio.
Fine bookbinding is all about measuring and exact precision – there are no short cuts.
We cut the italian rag paper to size – cut the boards and glue them together … a long process of love.
Thanks to Jen Brister who took these photos of me when she was my intern.
Mounting the images on each page.
Making the holes to sew the album together.
Decorative inlay papers and printing are a beautiful way to start an album with printing on the pages.
Sewing the album pages together – making sure that it opens properly.
The round spine is actually made from thin pieces of rag board glued together and then set on a round tube that fits the size of the albums depth.
It’s extremely important to make sure that the size of boards fit absolutely perfectly with the body of the book.
This is tedious work – but I love it! It becomes a meditation for me.
There are a vast number of cover materials, stamping, imprinting … and then assembling the cover to the album.
Once the album is completed we often make a slip cover or portfolio box to house the album.
This was Sam and Andy’s album. Their wedding was featured in INSIDE weddings magazine, so we made a pouch to hold the magazine as well.
They are a labor of love – A work of Art – and become timeless and precious Heirlooms.
One of the highlights of my day is a visit for my sweet boy …
